Assessments of Nigeria range from level 2 to level 4, a spread of two levels. South Korea and Taiwan take the strictest view and four of the twelve governments the most relaxed, with the largest group at level 3. A gap this size usually means the risk is concentrated in particular areas rather than spread evenly across the country.
Currency varies between sources. New Zealand's is the oldest assessment of Nigeria on file, last revised in December 2024, while the rest have been reviewed more recently.
The warnings for Nigeria are not uniform across the country. 50 distinct areas are singled out by at least one government. Among them: Northeast (Borno State, Yobe State and Adamawa State) and North Central (Kwara State). At least one of these carries the highest possible rating, meaning a government advising against all travel there while rating the rest of the country lower.
South Korea and Taiwan currently advise against all travel, and that has consequences beyond the wording: most policies void cover for travel taken against your own government's advice, and consular assistance may be limited or unavailable on the ground.
