Assessments of Democratic Republic of the Congo range from level 2 to level 4, a spread of two levels. Five of the eleven governments take the strictest view and Japan and United Kingdom the most relaxed, with the largest group at level 4. A gap this size usually means the risk is concentrated in particular areas rather than spread evenly across the country.
Currency varies between sources. New Zealand's is the oldest assessment of Democratic Republic of the Congo on file, last revised in February 2025, while the rest have been reviewed more recently.
The warnings for Democratic Republic of the Congo are not uniform across the country. 40 distinct areas are singled out by at least one government. Among them: Kwamout Region in Mai-Ndombe Province and North Kivu Province. At least one of these carries the highest possible rating, meaning a government advising against all travel there while rating the rest of the country lower.
Five of the eleven governments currently advise against all travel, and that has consequences beyond the wording: most policies void cover for travel taken against your own government's advice, and consular assistance may be limited or unavailable on the ground.
