Opinion on Bangladesh is divided, though not dramatically: ratings run from level 2 to level 3. Four of the twelve take the stricter view, and the remaining eight see no cause for it. A one-level split of this kind usually reflects differing thresholds between governments rather than a dispute about the facts.
Currency varies between sources. New Zealand's is the oldest assessment of Bangladesh on file, last revised in November 2024, while the rest have been reviewed more recently.
The warnings for Bangladesh are not uniform across the country. Nine distinct areas are singled out by at least one government. Among them: Chittagong Hill Tracts Region for any reason and Southern Chittagong Hill Tracts region. At least one of these carries the highest possible rating, meaning a government advising against all travel there while rating the rest of the country lower.
The level 3 rating from four of the twelve governments carries practical weight even if your own government is more relaxed — insurers commonly price against, or exclude, travel contrary to official advice, so the rating that matters most is the one issued for your passport.
